How Much Should You Budget for New Flooring in South Florida?

How much should you be spending on new flooring? Homeowners ask this question all the time. The truth is, there’s no universal answer. Material and installation are separate costs, so each one will change based on the product you choose.

Kenny Teich, co-owner of Floors To Go of Lighthouse Point, breaks down all the numbers in the video above. Here’s what you should know.

Material and Installation Are Two Different Costs

When you receive a flooring quote, your project cost will be broken down into the product and installation process. Both can vary. That’s why a price for one floor won’t tell you much about another. Before you buy, look at each product on its own.

Breaking Down Material Costs

Depending on the flooring material you choose, you’ll be paying a different price for your project. That’s why we’ve broken down each one by price so you can shop accordingly:

Vinyl and Laminate

Vinyl and laminate flooring are budget-friendly. They’re also built to handle daily wear and tear. Materials typically range from $3 to $7 per square foot based on the type of product, its thickness, and its width.

Tile

Tile is known for its moisture resistance, which makes it a strong fit for bathrooms and humid South Florida homes. Tile material costs run from $4 to $15 per square foot. Size makes the biggest difference. Standard types sit on the lower end, while large-format tile costs more.

Engineered Wood

Known for its layered construction, engineered hardwood is a top choice for the humidity of South Florida. Material starts at $7 per square foot and can go up to $15 to $18 for luxury products. When comparing quotes, consider the product line alongside the product type.

Installation Costs

Besides materials, you have to consider how much it will cost to install your flooring. The price often comes down to the product and the space. Here’s an overview:

  • Vinyl and Laminate: Depending on the type of installation, costs range from $5 to $7 per square foot.
  • Tile: Where the tile is going makes a difference. Installation runs from $6 to $12 per square foot. For example, a bathroom that needs waterproofing, a larger-format tile, or a mosaic pattern will cost more.
  • Engineered Hardwood: Installation costs are $5 to $10 per square foot. The method makes a difference. Consider whether your installation includes glue or adhesive, and whether baseboards are part of the job.

Why the Numbers Move

Several factors can impact the price of your flooring project. Product, size, installation method, the room, and subfloor issues all play a role. That’s why the team at Floors To Go of Lighthouse Point measures your space and reviews your estimate line by line before starting work.
